Case Study: IKEA

Eleven Flameshield EVO1 S systems installed as part of a fit-out of one of the UK's most recognisable retail destinations.

Introduction

As one of the world's most visited retail brands, its UK stores serve millions of customers each year across large-format, multi-level sites designed to move significant volumes of people safely and efficiently. When a fit-out project at the Brighton store required compliant fire and smoke compartmentation, A1S Group was appointed to supply and install eleven Flameshield EVO1 S fire and smoke curtain systems across the site.

The Challenge

Large retail environments present a specific set of fire safety challenges. High occupant density, open-plan floor layouts, and the need to maintain clear sightlines and unobstructed circulation routes all place demands on any fire protection solution. The requirement here was to achieve compliant fire and smoke compartmentation across multiple zones within an existing building, without introducing fixed barriers that would interfere with the retail environment or the customer experience during normal operation.

The Solution

A1S Group installed eleven Flameshield EVO1 S systems throughout the store. The Flameshield EVO1 S is a high-performance active fire and smoke curtain tested to BS EN 1634 and BS EN 1634-3, providing 120 minutes of fire integrity, 85 minutes of radiation protection, and smoke control performance. Each system deploys automatically from a concealed head box on activation, creating an effective compartmentation barrier whilst remaining entirely out of sight during day-to-day operation.

The Outcome

Eleven systems were successfully installed and commissioned as part of the completed fit-out. The project demonstrates A1S Group's capability to deliver fire and smoke curtain solutions at scale within operational retail environments without impacting the function or aesthetic of the finished space.
